On September 12, 2003, the SGN Scoops Magazine Diamond Awards were held during the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Gary was on hand to present an award during the ceremony. Little did he know he would walk away with an award of his own that day?
The first award presented was the Paul Heil DJ Of The Year Award, for which there were no official nominees. Gary was standing at the back of the room when Paul Heil began to speak. “Once I begin the introduction it will not take very long for you to figure out the identity of this year’s Paul Heil Award. The Paul Heil Award is presented to a DJ for the outstanding work they do in the industry.” He continued, “This year’s recipient produces the Southern Gospel USA Countdown Show. (Applause begins) He also produces a version of the program, especially for the American Forces Radio Network. In addition, he compiles the weekly Top 20 national chart, and has also created a website for DJ’s called, The Media Kit. This year’s recipient of the Paul Heil Award is Gary Wilson.”
When Gary reached the platform, he accepted the trophy from Paul Heil with a handshake, stood behind the podium, and began to speak. “Thank you! I don’t know what surprises me more. Receiving the award, or Paul Heil presenting a DJ award. (Laughter) I would like to thank SGN Scoops magazine for honoring me with the Paul Heil Award today. It is totally unexpected!”
“Today is September 12, 2003. As I was driving to Louisville early this morning, I could not help but think back two years ago as our country dealt with the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. America changed that day. Little did I know that my life would be drastically changed too, as September 11th was the last day I saw my Father alive. He passed away in his sleep during the early morning hours of September 12th. He went to sleep in North Carolina, but woke up in Heaven.”
“My Father was a decorated World War II Veteran. One of the last memories I have of my Father is watching the tears stream down his face as he watched the country he fought for being attacked on that horrible day.”
“As Paul mentioned, I produce a version of my show each week, especially for the American Forces Radio Network. I conclude each program with a dedication to my Father. Today, I dedicate this award to him as well. Dad, this is for you! I love you. Thank you!” |
